How We Prep for a Show (Even Though It’s “Unscripted”)

People often ask us, “If improv is all made up on the spot, what exactly are you rehearsing?”
It’s a fair question—and a fun one to answer!
Yes, ComedySportz and most of our shows are completely unscripted. But that doesn’t mean we walk on stage cold. In fact, the preparation we do behind the scenes is crucial to making the magic happen.
🎯 What We Actually Practice in Improv Rehearsals
We’re not memorizing lines—we’re training our brains and bodies to respond faster, listen better, and collaborate more fully. Here’s what that looks like:
Warm-Up Games – To get us present, playful, and connected (and yes, to get comfortable failing with a smile).
Scene Work – Practicing character choices, emotional reactions, and how to build scenes that matter, even when they're ridiculous.
Short-Form Games – We run through the games we might play in a ComedySportz match—just like an athlete running drills.
Team Dynamics – Improvisers are only as strong as their ensemble. We practice reading each other’s energy and building group trust.
🧠 We Prep Skills, Not Scripts
Improv rehearsals help us:
Think on our feet
Trust our instincts
React with clarity
Communicate under pressure
Laugh through uncertainty
All of that adds up to a show that’s high-energy, unpredictable, and packed with joyful surprises.
🎤 Before a Show? It’s Game Time!
On show days, you’ll often find us:
Running energizers in the green room
Rehearsing one or two favorite games
Checking in as a team—“What do you need tonight?”
Reminding each other that failure is part of the fun
Even unscripted magic needs a little behind-the-scenes sparkle.
